WE ARE LEGION: Occupy At Its Best

Anonymous is real and the powers that be should be fucking terrified.
I remember how impactful it was seeing the masses of people living on their own accord in Zuccotti Park that cold November in 2011 when I was living in New York City as a young budding film producer. This was before my interest in populist politics was a general norm in my life, and it fascinated me that these people, all my age, were this angry that they would camp out in the cold to stand by their beliefs. Little did I know how impactful this would be and how it would form the underlying fight against the growing income inequality and corruption in the United States…creating what is now known as the Occupy Movement.
It was then that I realized something big was about to happen in this country and it was time for me to wise up and get clued in. This movement was not started so privileged millennials could have something to complain about. This was real, the issues were real and a change needed to happen. At that time, people were unaware of the gross negligence and corporate shackles that were being placed on our legislators. I even had a college education and had no idea that our politicians were being bought and that our democracy had turned into a modern day, fascist, “Roman Empire” of sorts. How could I have missed this and how could things have gotten this bad without anyone realizing it? It was only then that I realized that the world would soon feel the same struggle and the same dedication to change as those young brothers and sisters who almost froze to death in that park during the Occupy Wall Street protests. It was only then that I realized the world would never be the same again. The movement in Zuccotti Park was a significant moment in my generation’s fight to unveil the curtain covering the corporate greed and bureaucratic corruption in this country; but who else was fighting for us? Who else was protesting and making real change? Sleeping in a park sends a message but where was the action? Then, out of the abyss appeared Anonymous.
A self-proclaimed vigilante hacker group, Anonymous’ obsession with Internet forums and their ability to hack any mainframe server was a match made in heaven for a group of angry millennials looking to send a message loud and clear to the powers that be:
“We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect Us.”
From taking down prominent government websites like the DOJ or the DOD, to jamming the call lines of the church of Scientology, there is nothing holding this group back from getting closer to their goal. What that goal is? In the thrilling documentary, “We Are Legion” we are taken into the deep dark center of Anonymous, who their leaders were and what their grand plan is as we venture forth into the unknown future of America. The documentary profiles early prominent members of Anon and how they created the group and how it rose to such fame. If you have 90 minutes for an insightful and fascinating look into the world of coding with the most influential and powerful hacker group of all time, “We Are Legion” is a must see.
